James Seth Burnett

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, the fifth of seven children to his parents, Bridgett and Anthony Burnett. Growing up in a large family taught him early the values of teamwork, resilience, and looking out for the people around you — lessons that would shape his life in public service.

James attended Houston Christian University (formerly Houston Baptist University), where he became deeply involved in campus leadership and student advocacy. In addition to being a two-sport Division I athlete for the Huskies in football & track, he also served as a Class Senator in the SGA, President of the Pre-Law Society, Co-founder of the College Democrats, and an active member of both the African Students Association and the Black Student Union. It was here, surrounded by community and responsibility, that James first felt the pull of public service — the belief that leadership begins with showing up for others.

That belief would eventually lead him onto the ballot. In 2022, James ran for the Texas House of Representatives in the newly redrawn District 76 in Fort Bend County, becoming one of the youngest candidates in the region. His campaign was rooted in lived experience and driven by a commitment to stronger public schools, affordable healthcare, and a Texas where every Texan has a voice. The election didn’t end in victory, but it ignited a deeper purpose: building communities where progress is shaped by the people.

Before and after his campaign, James poured his energy into uplifting young and emerging leaders. As President of the Harris County Young Democrats from 2018 to 2021, he helped transform the chapter into one of the most active in the state — expanding youth participation, building new coalitions, and empowering a new generation to engage in civic life.

James’ public service journey has spanned local government, statewide campaigns, and community organizing. He served in key roles with Harris County Precinct One and now with Harris County Precinct Four, where he works as a Community Engagement Coordinator representing Commissioner Lesley Briones. His work centers on connecting residents with services, building partnerships, and ensuring government remains accessible and accountable.

He also worked on major statewide and federal campaigns, including Colin Allred for U.S. Senate, Beto for Texas, and Sri Preston Kulkarni for Congress, and previously led a political consulting firm focused on progressive policy and civic engagement across Texas. Throughout every chapter of his career, James has remained focused on uplifting communities and creating more equitable systems for all Texans.

Today, James shares a home in Houston with the love of his life, Karen, and together they are preparing for their greatest adventure yet: welcoming their baby boy in April.
